Visit Reeves-Reed Arboretum in Summit, NJ, this summer and enjoy cookies and iced tea on the house.

Reeves-Reed Arboretum is a 12.5 acre suburban conservancy with 5 acres of formal gardens designed by Calvert Vaux (Frederick Law Olmsted's partner in landscaping Central Park), Ellen Biddle Shipman (a groundbreaking woman landscape architect), and Carl F. Pilat (aficionadoes who know who he was are entitled to extra cookies).

Horticulturists will give guided tours of the stunning gardens and then return you to the 1889 Colonial Revival style Wisner House, where you will sit on the lawn and sip tea and eat home-made cookies.

There is no charge for Tea on the Terrace, but advance reservations are required. Call (908) 273-8787.

Tea will be served on the terrace from 1 to 3 p.m. on June 24, July 8, July 22 and August 5. Reeves-Reed Arboretum, 165 Hobart Avenue in Summit, is a pleasant one-mile walk from the Summit train station.

This year Reeves-Reed Arboretum is celebrating its 30th anniversary as a suburban conservancy dedicated to environmental and horticultural education for children and adults, and to the enjoyment of nature through the professional care and preservation of a historic country estate.

No Such Thing As Free Lunch?

Who says there's no such thing as a free lunch? How does pizza lunch and home-baked cookies sound?

Show up at Reeves-Reed Arboretum, 165 Hobart Avenue in Summit, NJ, at 9 a.m., on Saturday, June 13. After a continental breakfast, attendees will learn hands-on about invasive exotic plants in New Jersey (i.e., they will weed)

At noon, enjoy a hearty pizza lunch on the grounds of the 12.5 acre arboretum followed by cookies baked by grateful staff members, especially the horticulture department.

Please call ahead at (908) 273-8787 extension 18 so the horticulturists can order enough pizza.
